This time we spoke with David Rees, whose luminous watercolours of the Shropshire landscape have been some of our most popular pieces for the past three years.

Where did it all begin?

David grew up in Church Stretton and spent his childhood walking the Long Mynd with his parents. He started painting seriously in his forties — “I always drew as a child but life got in the way,” he laughs — and discovered watercolour almost by accident when a friend left a set of paints at his kitchen table.

“Watercolour suits me because it’s honest. You can’t over-work it. You put the paint down and you commit to it.”

The Shropshire series

His current series captures the county across the four seasons — early frost on the hills above Clun, bluebells in Wenlock Edge, the golden shimmer of a July afternoon near Much Wenlock. Each painting takes between three days and two weeks to complete.

We stock a rotating selection of originals (from £145) and a range of high-quality limited edition prints (from £28). David will be joining us at our Maker’s Meet on 26th April if you’d like to meet him in person.

Come in and take a look — they really are something special. 🎨

We sat down with David Rees, whose luminous watercolours of the Shropshire landscape have been some of our most popular pieces.
